Swing on by the New Dr. Greens in Ashland

By WMRC's Ray Auger - There’s a new playground in Ashland!  Dr. Greens Indoor Golf offers simulated golf, pool, shuffleboard and a full pub for your entertainment and dining pleasures.  There seems to be something for everything at Dr. Greens and yet very unique to the local area.  We got in touch with one of the three owners, Joanna Moses, to learn more…

Hello Joanna.  Congratulations on the opening of your new business.  You must be excited!

Thanks yes we're very excited.  We've been wanting to do something like this for a while now and this just seemed like the right time and the right opportunity.

You and your husband are from Mendon?

That's right, we live in Mendon.  We've been here for about two and a half years now and we love it.  The schools are great, the people are great; you couldn't find a better town to raise a family in.

Tell me all about Dr. Greens Indoor Golf.

We designed Dr. Greens to be a place that people love to go to. We really want to thrill and delight our customers with every visit to our store. The concept is really very simple. At our core we are an indoor golf center with seven high-end golf simulators, the same ones that are used on the PGA tour.  We also have shuffleboard tables and pool tables as well. There's a full bar and pub menu so make sure you bring your appetite when you come. We wanted to make sure there was something for everybody that walked in our door.  We offer lessons from our local pro, Burgess Houston, for anybody looking to perfect their swing or just learn how to play the game of golf.

Where did the idea come from?

It was really just supply and demand. There are a lot of golfers here in the area and not enough of these indoor centers to meet the demand.  We've seen several of these types of places open up around the greater Boston area over the past few years, but not enough of them in our opinion.  When we talked to the owners of these other stores we realized that people were driving long distances to get to them.  We were actually some of those people that we driving long distances to go play indoors. There seemed to be more demand then supply in this area, so we thought we'd give it a shot.

Is Dr. Greens family friendly?

Absolutely yes. We have mini golf and several different kid friendly games that children can play when they come in. We have ice cream and brownies on the menu which are always kid favorites.  Of course there's beer and alcohol available so we would encourage parents to come with their kids during the day rather than at night. We also are a great place to host a birthday party for kids.

What are some of the highlights of the new business that you would like to point out?

Three things: lessons, events and leagues. We have a great pro that would love to help you with your golf swing. I've worked with him myself and in just a short time I've seen a remarkable difference in my game. Second, leagues.  Our winter leagues start on January 16 and registration is open on our website. Leagues are a great way to have some fun, win some prizes and play competitive golf regardless of your level all winter long. And finally we would love to host your next event.  It's a great place for corporate work events, birthday parties and celebrations.  We can hold as many as 60 people for an event.

Can you expand on the leagues?

Leagues start on January 16 and we're going to run 3 consecutive six week sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays.  If we run out of room on those nights, we will be happy to open up other days and times as well.

You can sign up for as little as six weeks for $175 or as much as 18 weeks for $400.  We will do weekly prizes and a grand prize for the winner at the end of each six week session. You can sign up as individuals and be paired with other individuals or you can sign up as a team of two. We will be leveraging handicaps so it will be competitive regardless of your ability.

People can register online on our website or email us at info@drgreensgolf.com or just give us a call.

Where did the name come from?

It's actually kind of an inside joke. My father-in-law used to tease his wife and say that he had an appointment with Dr. Greens whenever he was going golfing. We probably had a dozen other names that we were talking about and then Joanna remembered that and it was the first name we all kind of thought could be catchy and memorable.

When you are not at Dr. Greens, what do you like to do locally?

Well between the three of us we have seven kids.  So that tends to keep us all pretty busy; lots of sports, lots of practices, lots of birthday parties and lots of homework at night. We're also all diehard New England sports fans with the exception of one of us who is a Miami Dolphins fan.  We all feel pretty sorry for him.

I know you just opened but do you have a wish list for future plans at Dr. Greens?

Our immediate goal is to make this store is successful as possible.  If we can do that then the sky is the limit.  We know that there are many more golfers in the Boston area that are dying for places like this to open up near them. Just talking to our own personal network of friends and family, there are a lot of people out there that would love to be able to come see us on a more regular basis but they're just too far away. If we can work out a successful business model here, we would love to expand to some of those other areas to help bring this experience to those folks.
